-St. Francis of Assisi

artist's notes:
When I was a little girl, we often attended Sunday Mass at St. Anthony's Shrine, run by the Franciscans in downtown Boston. If we were really lucky, we got to go to Mass in the upstairs church, whose multi-story stained glass windows told of the life of St. Francis. How I loved to look at those windows!

For this design, I chose colors of Umbria, where Assisi is located. They are beautiful, varied, and down-to-earth, just as St. Francis was. They remind me of the Italian countryside as well as the stonework seen throughout Italy.

elements:
8mm jasper, tiger eye, African opal, aventurine. Bronze cross. Includes bronze St. Francis medal.

More than 800 years after he lived, St. Francis remains one of the most beloved of all saints -- even among people who follow no particular faith at all! Perhaps part of the reason is that he believed that showing the love of Christ was more compelling than telling people about it.

There are hundreds of powerful stories about him -- from taming the wolf who threatened the town, to preaching in nature, to showing love to the leper he met in the road, to receiving the stigmata - the wounds of the Lord - from Christ Himself.

The crucifix is a San Damiano cross in bronze, a reproduction of an antique. It was while praying before such a cross at the church of San Damiano that St. Francis heard the Lord speak to him and say, "Francis, go and repair My house, which you see is falling down."
Designer's note:
I've attached to the back of the cross a St. Francis medal, here depicted among the birds he loved.  In addition to birds and animals, St. Francis is the patron saint of the environment, merchants, and Italy. Read his lyrical Canticle of the Sun on this page from the Franciscan order.
